Texas Cup 2009 has arrived and the Oak Lawn Tennis Association is hosting the members from the Houston Tennis Club and the Austin Tennis Club for our annual tournament between the three cities. The tournament will be held at the Samuell-Grand Tennis Center (located at 6200 E Grand Ave; Dallas, TX). Below is the itinerary for the event:
Friday, May 1
7:30-9:30 pm – Welcome Reception at Woody’s Sports Bar & Grill, 4011 Cedar
Springs Rd, Dallas TX
– Come mingle with the other teams, have some
snacks/drinks and watch yourself compete on the club’s big screen TVs with
video from former Texas Cups!
Saturday, May 2
8:00 a.m. - All teams arrive at Samuell Grand Tennis Center for practice, team
photos, etc.
8:45 a.m. - Draw (*note to captains: we are using the same format as previous years and please bring your line-up on
USB memory stick.)
9:00 a.m. - First round of singles matches
11:00 a.m. - Second round of singles matches
BREAK
2:00 p.m. - First round of doubles matches
BREAK
6:30-8:30 pm – Reception for participants at Bengal Coast Restaurant, 3102 Oak Lawn Ave,
Dallas – An outstanding restaurant for Asian/Indian Fusion cuisine. Please stop by for some great appetizers and drinks (heavy hors d'oeuvres, cash bar).
Sunday, May 3
8:30 a.m. - All teams arrive at Samuell-Grand Tennis Center for warm up
9:00 a.m. - Second round of doubles matches on court
11:00 a.m. - Third round of doubles matches on court
1:00 p.m. (estimated time.) - Trophy presentation
Due to Texas Cup, regularly scheduled OLTA sessions have been canceled on Friday, May 1 and Sunday, May 3. We do hope you come out as spectator and cheer on your local team. :)

Oak Lawn Tennis Association Celebrates 30 Years of Fun |

This year marks the 30th year for the Oak Lawn Tennis Association (OLTA), one of the longest-running gay sports organizations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. And the club is still going as strong as ever.
In 1979, a small group of gay friends who enjoyed playing tennis and socializing together formed and began playing regularly in Cole Park in the Oak Lawn area. As the first organization to actively promote gay and lesbian tennis, it organized and adopted the name Oak Lawn Tennis Association (OLTA).
OLTA has played host to the first gay tennis tournament in the country held since 1980 now known as the Texas Open. Held in October over Columbus Day weekend, this tournament has now grown to between 120 and 140 participants and hosts players from across the nation including some international players. It features athletes of all skill levels, from beginners and casual recreational players to top athletes who played college and advanced competition.
In 1981, OLTA began a friendly, inter-club competition between another gay tennis club in Houston, the Houston Tennis Club. This event became known as the ‘Texas Cup’, named after the Cup, a trophy, which was awarded to the winning team.
Today, the Texas Cup includes a third gay group, the Austin Tennis Club, and is held annually each Spring by a different host city, usually in the May time frame. This year OLTA hosts the Texas Cup here in Dallas at Samuel Grand Tennis Center on May 2-3.
Today, 30 years after its start, OLTA continues as a fun, vibrant group that plays tennis together three times a week, holds a variety of social events and casual get-togethers, and actively supports other gay & lesbian community organizations through its fund raising endeavors. OLTA has raised notable contributions for groups like the AIDS Resource Center, AIDS Interfaith Network, and Youth First Texas by participating in fundraising activities such as GayBingo, Tournament Raffles and direct contributions. OLTA has also sponsored food drives/donations for the Food Pantry.
To celebrate its 30th season, OLTA is sponsoring a weekend of tennis activities and fun events on Friday, March 27 through Sunday, March 29, and called the ‘Oak Lawn Tennis Association 30th Year Weekend Bash!’ Everybody in the community is welcome to attend for free, especially interested tennis players. There will be tennis play (all levels), contests, prizes, giveaways, free drinks, free food and overall a lot of fun!
